Developed as a study for an upcoming body of work, Step up/ Step down (Study) considers the parallels between Freestyle BMX and sustainable building practices. Primarily drawing on the artist’s involvement in these activities as an autobiographical starting point, the work seeks to read the built environment as an index of deeper cultural, behavioural and ideological trends. In this way, both enterprises harness the sculptural potential of vernacular structures to render the most primary gestures in response to our broader human ecology.

This work is part of an ongoing series of small sculptures responding to these themes.
